If you’re new to Kratom, chances are you’ve asked yourself one big question:

“Which Kratom strain should I even start with?”

With so many Kratom strain names, vein colors, and effects floating around online, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. One minute you’re researching Kratom for beginners, and the next you’re staring at names like White Maeng Da, Green Malay, and Red Bali, wondering if you accidentally enrolled in a botany class.

This beginner-friendly Kratom guide breaks down everything you need to know about Kratom strains, effects, vein colors, and serving sizes in a simple, casual, and easy-to-understand way. By the end, you’ll feel much more confident choosing the best Kratom strain for your needs.

My First Kratom Experience (Or Lack Thereof!)

Before getting hired by Happy Hippo, I did what every responsible person does before an interview: I researched the company. I went to the website and was ready to soak up all the knowledge about Kratom. But within seconds, I was slightly confused.

There were so many different strains, each with its own quirky Happy Hippo name and a fancy botanical counterpart (i.e., White Vein Maeng Da vs. Rockstar Hippo). My brain immediately thought: If I wanted to buy Kratom right now, I’d have NO clue where to start!

Sound familiar? If you’ve ever felt this way, relax! You’re in good company, and I’m here to help you make sense of it all.

Kratom Strain Speeds: Slow, Moderate, Fast!

To make things simple, we categorize Kratom into three speeds:

  • Fast Strains: Think of these like your morning coffee; great for energy, productivity, and boosting your social mood.

  • Slow Strains: Great for winding down, promoting a sense of well-being, and easing general discomfort.

  • Moderate Strains: The middle ground, balanced effects of relaxation and energy, making them great all-around choices.

Once you know which speed best suits your needs, you can dive deeper into the different strain options within that category.

Decoding Kratom Strain Names

Every Kratom strain name consists of two key parts:

  1. Vein Color (This refers to the leaf’s vein color at harvest.)

    • Red Vein: Typically offers relaxation and calming effects.

    • Green Vein: Best for clarity, focus, and a balanced feeling.

    • White Vein: Energizing and motivating, which is great for tackling that to-do list.

    • Yellow/Gold Vein: Mood-lifting and euphoric, offering a unique experience.

  2. Region of Origin (This impacts how the leaf resonates.)

    • Fast Strains: Maeng Da, Thai

    • Moderate Strains: Indo

    • Slow Strains: Borneo, Viet, Bali, Hulu, Sumatra

Where a Kratom plant is grown actually affects how it works in your body. Pretty cool, right?

How to Choose the Best Kratom Strain for You

The “best” Kratom strain depends entirely on your goals.

Ask yourself:

Looking for energy and motivation?

Try:

  • White strains
  • Fast greens
  • Maeng Da varieties

Looking for balance and focus?

Try:

  • Green strains
  • Moderate-speed options

Looking to relax and unwind?

Try:

  • Red strains
  • Slower Borneo or Bali varieties

The most important thing to remember is this:

There Is No Universal “Best” Kratom Strain

What works amazingly for one person may not work the same way for someone else.

Kratom is incredibly individual, and finding your perfect strain is part of the experience.

Unlocking the “Sweet Spot” for Your Kratom Experience

When trying Kratom for the first time, many people either take too much (resulting in an upset stomach) or too little (feeling nothing at all).

Here’s where the Sweet Spot comes in! Finding your ideal serving size takes a little experimentation, but here’s a beginner-friendly guide:

Beginner Kratom Serving Recommendations

For Women

  • Under 125 lbs: 0.25 – 0.50 grams
  • 125 – 160 lbs: 0.50 – 0.75 grams
  • Over 160 lbs: 0.75 – 1 gram

For Men

  • Under 150 lbs: 0.75 – 1.50 grams
  • 150 – 210 lbs: 1.50 – 2.25 grams
  • Over 210 lbs: 2.25 – 3 grams

It’s always better to start low and gradually increase rather than taking too much and regretting it.

Pro Tip: Keep a Kratom Log! Jot down how much you take, when you take it, and how you feel. Adjust accordingly until you hit that perfect sweet spot.

Final Thoughts: Finding Your Favorite Kratom Strain Is Part of the Adventure

Your first Kratom order might not be the perfect match, and that’s okay! In fact, most experienced Kratom enthusiasts went through a little trial and error before finding what works best. That’s completely normal.

One of the best articles I’ve come across. I was once asking the same questions and this is straight forward and clear to understand. Thank you!

Your company, out of all I have researched, has been my safe and honest go-to, and has made such a difference in my day to day ability to get through life, with less pain and anxiety. I am devastated to find that my state has effectively banned Kratom from being purchased legally. I’ve been trying a buy as much as I can for now, but I am heartbroken. I wll have to find another way, but I appreciate the professionalism of Happy Hippo, and that it is a family run business. I don’t know what I will do here on out, but I appreciate the support.
