What is Akuamma and Where Does it Grow?

Akuamma, also known as Picralima Nitida, is a wonderful rainforest tree that grows natively in West Africa (primarily in Nigeria) alongside the riverbanks.

The seeds of the Akuamma tree are harvested and commonly used amongst the community for its various benefits.

Similar to Kratom leaves, Akuamma seeds contain special alkaloids that, when consumed, encourage highly calming and analgesic properties. While Akuamma seeds contain many different alkaloids, the most prominent is called Akuammine.

Almost every single part of the Akuamma tree can be consumed, but the seeds are said to be the most potent. Natives claim that all of the individual parts of the Akuamma tree (bark, leaves, seeds, and root) are rumored to have their own unique benefits.

Every day, more and more people are becoming aware of how magical these natural botanicals are. As a result, Akuamma continues to expand and become more recognized across the globe.

What is Akuammine?

Akuamma contains alkaloids that give the plant its unique benefits.

As mentioned above, Akuammine is the most abundant indole alkaloid in Akuamma. The Akuammine alkaloid acts on your delta and kappa receptors and it is claimed to uphold the physical relaxation and analgesic properties of the plant.

However, Akuammine works in harmony with dozens of other alkaloids such as Pericine, Akuammidine, Akuammicine, and Pseudoakuammigine. Each alkaloid is distinct and specific, which is what makes this plant so extraordinary!

Current scientific research on Akuamma is largely focused on the various alkaloids within the plant. Every day we are learning more and more about the relevance of Akuamma’s analgesic benefits.

The Benefits of Akuamma

Aside from their numerous biological similarities, the actual benefits of Akuamma are very similar to Kratom. Keep in mind that effects can differ between individuals, most of these claims are simply a user’s personal experience.

Some benefits of Akuamma include:

  • Relief of physical discomfort
  • Calm mind
  • Physical relaxation
  • Pleasant attitude
  • Supporting restful sleep

Akuamma vs. Kratom

Amazingly enough, Akuamma and Kratom share many similarities.

Happy Hippo is here to help you understand a few of the similarities and differences of Akuamma vs. Kratom!

Akuamma is occasionally used as a substitute for Kratom because of how alike their benefits are. The alkaloids in Akuamma are structurally comparable to Mitragynine (the primary alkaloid that resides in Kratom).

Both plants are used for overall balance, well-being support, discomfort relief, and restful sleep. As well, both plants are most commonly consumed in powder or capsule form.

However, a big difference between Akuamma and Kratom is the part of the plant that is generally harvested for consumption.

For Akuamma, most of the products you’ll see on the market derive from the seeds. For Kratom, most products derive from the leaves. Biologically, the trees differ because Akuamma trees produce flowers and seed-bearing fruits, while Kratom trees do not.

Despite all of their similarities, Akuamma and Kratom are still two separate plants, so not all of the effects will be identical. Effects of Akuamma and Kratom are subjective from person to person, it’s important to do your own personal research to see which botanical is best for your needs.

What Types of Products are Made From Akuamma?

The most common products you’ll find on the market are Akuamma Extracts and Akuamma Seed Powder.

Akuamma Extract is made by crushing the seeds and extracting the alkaloids using an ethanol-based process. You can find Akuamma Extract available at different potencies - 20x, 50x, etc. Akuamma Extracts are very similar to Tinctures, which you can also find from some vendors.

Akuamma Seed Powder is raw seeds crushed into a very fine powder. You can consume the powder alone by making it into a tea, or, you can put the powder into capsules. Capsules are convenient because they make it super easy to measure your serving sizes accurately.

You can even eat Akuamma seeds whole - sort of like pumpkin or sunflower seeds. If you’re a “DIY” type of person, whole Akuamma seeds can also be used with a mortar and pestle to grind it down into a fine powder at home.

It’s important to note that Akuamma seeds have an extremely unpleasant, bitter taste. Due to this, some people struggle drinking Akuamma Tea. In order to avoid the unfavorable taste, using capsules is highly recommended!

How To Use Akuamma

Even though Akuamma is similar to Kratom, you’ll want to take caution when trying it for the first time. Start low when evaluating the effectiveness of Akuamma. We always recommend starting with the smallest serving size and working your way up in increments from there.

For Happy Hippo’s 20x Akuamma Extract Capsules, we advise starting with 1-2 capsules. Raise your serving size by one capsule at a time - waiting at least 30 minutes for it to kick in - until you have reached your desired serving.
