This article is all about Thai Kratom - one of the most eminent Kratom strains in the world! Out of all of the different Kratom strains, why is Thai Kratom so popular? Well, we’re here to answer that question! As well, we’re going to be discussing each of its known strains, origins, specific benefits, and more.
Before we dive into the details of Thai Kratom specifically, it’s important that we go over what Kratom is and how it works.
Kratom comes from the marvelous Mitragyna Speciosa tree, but trust me, it’s not a normal tree. The leaves contain over 30 alkaloids including Mitragynine and 7-Hydroxymitragynine. It comes in a variety of strains and each strain has its own alkaloid profile that provides different effects. Most Kratom strains are named after the region of origin and the color of the veins on the Kratom leaf.

Depending on the strain you choose, it can help the user gain energy, relaxation, discomfort relief, encourage restful sleep, and promote a sense of well-being. What is Thai Kratom?
Thai Kratom did originate from Thailand, but when you purchase Thai Kratom, it was probably grown in a different region. Right now, most Thai Kratom is cultivated in other parts of Southeast Asia, mainly Indonesia, Borneo, and Malaysia. The Kratom tree absolutely loves the warm, humid tropical atmosphere of the jungles and it tends to thrive in those conditions.
Fun Fact: Thailand was the first place Kratom was formally documented by the Dutch Colonial botanist Pieter Korthals in 1839!
Kratom Legality in Thailand
Even though Thai Kratom is originally from Thailand, the Thai government actually chose to restrict the growth of Kratom in 1948. As you could imagine, farmers in Thailand were very upset and distraught. This restriction ceased growth in Thailand, but it did not stop the growth of Kratom in Southeast Asia altogether. Instead, surrounding territories started increasing its volume to compensate for the loss.
In 2018, the Thai government decided to legalize the growth of Kratom for medicinal purposes, and in 2021 they decriminalized Kratom altogether.
Thai Kratom Strains and Their Benefits
Thai Kratom can be found in four different varieties: White, Green, Red, and Yellow. Let’s take a look at what benefits each strain provides.
White Thai Kratom (Lightning Hippo)
- White Thai Kratom is best known for the strong tones of energy and motivation. It provides clean energy, focus, and a sense of productivity to the user.
Green Thai Kratom (Atomic Hippo)
- Green Thai Kratom is best known for how closely its effects compare to Maeng Da Kratom strains. It provides balanced energy without going overboard. It’s a great strain to help you feel outgoing and social, while feeling content all the while.
Red Thai Kratom (Invincible Hippo)
- Red Thai Kratom is more subtle than the White and Green varieties. It still provides a boost in energy, but it’s not as pronounced as the others. Instead, it’s more mentally motivating, which is great for conjuring creativity and peaking your imagination.
Yellow Thai Kratom
- Although Happy Hippo doesn’t carry Yellow Thai Kratom at the moment, we’ve heard that the effects are very balanced. Most people enjoy using Yellow Thai to help them combat physical discomfort and encourage feelings of relaxation.
How is Thai Kratom Grown?
Today, Thai Kratom is grown throughout Thailand and many of the surrounding areas. Kratom farmers work tirelessly throughout the year maintaining dozens of fully developed trees. As the trees mature, the leaves grow larger and develop more and more alkaloids. You only want to pick the leaves when they’re at prime maturity.
Once a tree is deemed ready for harvest, farmers will carefully pluck the leaves from the tree and rinse them with water to remove any dirt and debris. From there, the leaves are hung on racks and left for a few weeks to dry. Some leaves undergo a different drying process where they are left in the sunlight for a longer period, allowing them to develop different alkaloid profiles. When exposed to sunlight for a longer period, it creates a unique yellow hue on the veins. This is referred to as the fourth vein color, Yellow Vein Kratom.
As well, some of the harvested leaves will get fermented before drying which creates a unique strain called Bentuangie Kratom.
After the Kratom has completed its drying process, it gets crushed and ground into a very fine powder. The powder is sterilized by a special heating process, which eliminates contaminants and any bacteria. Lastly, it is carefully packaged for distribution and shipped across the world.
How to Use Thai Kratom
In general, Kratom powder can be consumed in a few different ways. Thai Kratom is no different. The most common way to take Kratom is by making the powder into a tea and drinking it that way. However, there are a couple of other methods you can use.

Toss and Wash - For this method, you take your desired serving of Kratom and toss it directly into your mouth, quickly following with a beverage to wash it down.
We don’t typically recommend this method because it’s quite difficult to swallow down dry powder and it’s a choking hazard. Instead, we recommend mixing your serving into a small amount of water and drinking it quickly like a shot.

Kratom Capsules - Capsules are measured amounts of Kratom Powder encapsulated in a pill-like form. You swallow a couple of capsules followed by water. Kratom capsules are great for anyone who lives an on-the-go lifestyle because they are very portable and convenient.

Kratom Extracts - Kratom Extracts are much more potent than regular powder. It undergoes an extraction process to isolate the alkaloids. It’s usually found in liquid form. Kratom Extracts make it so that you can consume much less product to get more advanced effects.
Note: Most Kratom Extracts are NOT made from Thai Kratom. They typically come from Maeng Da Kratom strains, but in some instances, you may be able to find extracts made from solely Thai leaf.
Thai Kratom vs. Maeng Da Kratom
For the most part, Thai Kratom and Maeng Da Kratom are closely related. In fact, most Maeng Da strains are actually cultivated from Thai strains, but they are considered to be of the highest quality and potency. Thai Kratom is one of the most abundant Kratom strains in the world. It has a reputation for being a more moderate version of a Maeng Da leaf.
