In the past couple of decades, the natural supplement sector in the United States expanded. The marijuana industry helped that happen. When the federal government legalized industrial hemp, the herbal industry was in full swing.
During that time, the market introduced quite a few amazing botanical products. And older herbal supplements gained popularity by the resurgence of natural holistic interests.
Kratom was an herbal substance that found renewed growth in those years. Plenty of other amazing botanicals shared an uptick in sales, too. However, the expansion of scientific discoveries in the health-and-wellness industry suggests we’re only scratching the surface of the powerful potential of plants.
In this article, we’re going to cover a few amazing botanicals found on the market and discuss some of the benefits these plant substances provide. Then you can decide which ones match your needs.
The amazing botanicals we’ll focus on are Kratom, Kava, Akuamma, and Kanna. There are a few varieties of each product. We’ll go over those differences, too!
What Makes Kratom an Amazing Botanical?
Out of all the amazing botanicals, Kratom is in a league of its own. The tree grows in Southeast Asia and it’s related to the coffee plant. The two primary alkaloids in Kratom (Mitragynine and 7-Hydroxymitragynine) produce various Kratom benefits. Here are some below.
Common Kratom Benefits:
- Energy
- Mental Focus
- Pro-Social Interactions
- Relaxation
- Reduces Discomfort
Serving sizes can alter the Kratom effects. For instance, smaller serving sizes are stimulating, while heavier amounts can make you drowsy. However, the type of Kratom strain you use plays a part, too. There are several Kratom varieties on the market. Read our ultimate guide to Kratom strains to understand them better. Typically, most are separated by the color of the vein in the leaf. The three primary Kratom veins are Red, White, and Green.
- Red Vein Kratom: Many Red Vein Kratom products provide a relaxed mood. Those products come from mature leaves.
- White Vein Kratom: The White Vein Kratom leaves are younger. People prefer taking those strains in the morning.
- Green Vein Kratom: Several Green Vein Kratom strains rank as our top-selling products. These leaves are in a prime state.
Kratom Extract Vs. Kratom Powder:
Most Kratom products are Kratom powders (made from dried, crushed Kratom leaves) and Kratom extracts. The concentration of alkaloids differs immensely between Kratom powder and Kratom extract. The latter being more potent.
-
Kratom Powders
You can buy every Kratom strain on the market as a traditional Kratom powder. It’s the most common product by far. Most are available as Kratom capsules to bypass its bitter flavor. However, Happy Hippo makes a flavored Kratom powder that tastes like Strawberry Limeade or Pineapple Grapefruit. It’s an enjoyable experience.
-
Kratom Extracts
Some individuals need more potency in their servings. Kratom extracts and energy shots work like a charm. They provide a highly concentrated Kratom alkaloid dose per serving. Those extracts act as the main active ingredient in Kratom specialty products.
Our Kratom Energy Shots contain 50 mg of mitragynine per bottle and they come in 6 fruity flavors. We also have a unique Sour Apple Kratom Extract Shot packed with 60 mg mitragynine. If you prefer your extract in an oil-based formula, try any of our four specialty liquid Kratom Extracts. Each 12mL bottle is equivalent to approximately 9 grams of plain leaf.
What Are the Best Kratom Strains?
The alkaloid profile varies with each Kratom strain to produce unique benefits. However, with so many Kratom strains available, consumers get overwhelmed. Let’s break some of them down.
-
Fast Speed Kratom: Fast Kratom strains give you more enthusiasm to stay productive. Take fast varieties when you have a lot on your plate.
-
Moderate Speed Kratom: Moderate Kratom strains provide balance throughout the day. Moderate varieties are slightly calming while producing clean energy.
-
Slow Speed Kratom: Slow speed strains produce a relaxing and comfortable state of mind and body. Slow varieties are best to unwind with at the end of a long, taxing day.
-
Maeng Da Kratom: Kratom consumers swear that Maeng Da strains are particularly potent. We agree.
-
Bali Kratom: Grown on Bali Island, these strains are great for cheering you up. Bali kratom strains work as mood enhancers.
-
Borneo Kratom: Coming from Borneo Island, each of these Borneo Kratom strains can keep you focused on even the most tedious task.
-
Thai Kratom: Mimicking the effects of kratom from the Thailand region, each Thai variety amplifies your mental awareness.
- Sumatra Kratom: Sumatra Island produces kratom strains that alleviate discomfort and shrug off unwanted mental woes.
How to Use Kratom
From experience, there are almost as many ways to take kratom as available strains. People keep coming up with new ways to use that amazing botanical. However, let's focus on the most common.
-
Kratom Tea
Traditionally, locals in Southeast Asian areas make large batches of Kratom tea before work. It keeps them motivated. Some Kratom consumers keep up that tradition to this day. Steep the Kratom powder in hot water. Allow it to cool. Then enjoy!
-
Kratom Toss and Wash
Some consumers prefer to “toss and wash” Kratom. The method involves shoveling a spoonful of Kratom directly into your mouth and chugging it down with a drink.
-
Kratom Capsules
Kratom powder also comes in pre-filled Kratom capsules. Pop a couple in your mouth and use a beverage to swallow them down.
-
Kratom Alkaloid Extracts
Other than Kratom powdered products, you can buy Kratom extract products. Their potency and selections keep the Kratom industry thriving.
What Other Products Are Made from Kratom?
Now, we’ve covered the wide selection of Kratom powders and extracts we sell. But we also have specialty Kratom items. Our Kratom treats are sure to impress all.
-
Kratom Taffy Chews
Does the bitter taste of kratom bother you? Well, you should try our Kratom Taffy Chews. These toffee-flavored treats are delicious and contain 20 mg of Mitragynine per serving. We recommend no more than two in 24 hours. -
Kratom Hippo Poppers
The Kratom Hippo Poppers are the newest Kratom edible in our Happy Hippo product line. Kratom Hippo Poppers are a type of Kratom popping candy containing extract.
As soon as the blue raspberry-flavored candies hit your tongue, they release tiny CO2 gas bubbles in your mouth. You’ll feel a slight popping sensation as you enjoy them. An individual pack contains a total of 50 mg of Mitragynine. That’s about 3-4 grams of regular Kratom powder. -
Kratom Extract Softgels
Our Kratom Extract Softgels gel capsules filled with Kratom extract. However, these are more potent than traditional Kratom capsules.
Each Kratom Extract Softgel contains approximately 15 mg of Mitragynine. So, it’s like taking an entire gram of raw Kratom powder, but the softgels require no prep time and are easy to swallow. We recommend you don’t combine caffeinated products with them.
What Makes Kava an Amazing Botanical?
Other plants provide therapeutic relief for consumers other than kratom. So let’s take a closer look at the Kava plant. Instead of its leaves, its roots are dried and ground to make an herbal beverage. But there are other distinct differences between Kava and Kratom, too.
For starters, the cultivation of Kava occurs in the Pacific islands. Its scientific name is Piper methysticum, which translates roughly as “intoxicating pepper,” since it’s a member of the pepper family. The flavor of Kava has a sharp, tart flavor. Kava means “bitter” in both Tongan and Marquesan languages.
Cash crops of Kava come from sterile cultivars cloned from its distant, wild ancestor, Piper wichmanii. Ancient civilizations began the propagation of the mutated species once they realized it had greater potency with less undesirable side effects. And the cloning process continues to this day.
Farmers take cuttings of roots from the best batches for new crops. That guarantees future yields have the optimal molecular compound profile and concentration. Scientists discovered 18 Kavalactones in Kava. That class of Polyketides produces the therapeutic effects of Kava. But most come from only 6: Methysticin, Hihydromethysticin, Kavain/Kawain, Dihydrokavain/Kawain, Desmethoxyyangonin, and Yangonin.
Waka Kava Vs. Vanuatu Kava:
Over 100 cultivars of Kava originate on separate islands across the Pacific. Today, we can focus on two: Waka Kava and Vanuatu Kava. How are they different?
- Vanuatu Kava Powder
This variety of Kava is grown in the Republic of Vanuatu, an island in the South Pacific Ocean. Most of its Kava gets sold domestically through local Kava bars to tourists and local inhabitants. However, a lucrative Kava export industry thrives there, too. The Vanuatu Kava powder sold through Happy Hippo contains approximately 6% Kavalactones. Plus, the root has been ground into a fine powder, so you don’t have to use pesky tea bags when preparing it. The effects of Vanuatu Kava are calm and relaxing. It reduces any unpleasant irritabilities from daily troubles.
- Waka Kava Powder
The roots of the Kava plant have offshoots called lateral roots. That second root meristem provides about 20% of the Kava root system. Yet, the lateral roots produce a higher concentration of Kavalactones than the primary portion of the root. Waka grade Kava comes from only its lateral roots. Happy Hippo sells a Fijian Waka Kava powder that is much more potent than its counterpart. Our Waka Kava powder contains an estimated 15% Kavalactones. Its effects are said to release tension, produce mental well-being, and can assist with getting good sleep.
What Makes Kanna an Amazing Botanical?
Kanna is another amazing botanical product that originates over in South Africa. Sceletium tortuosum, the scientific name of Kanna, is a succulent plant. Its leaves contain a thick, juicy sap inside. The indigenous tribes would chew on Kanna to quench their thirst while boosting their mood. Kanna produces several mesembrine-type alkaloids. However, only four alkaloids are responsible for most of its effectiveness: Mesembrine, Mesembrenone, Mesembranol, and Mesembrenol. Kanna consumers have touted several therapeutic effects of taking Kanna. Some of them are like Kratom. Look for yourself.
Common Kanna Effects:
- Boosts Mood
- Provides Energy
- Reduces Tension
- Cognitive Enhancement
You may find Kanna works magnificently as a Kratom substitute to provide yourself with a break from regular Kratom usage. That gives your body a chance to recalibrate from any possible Kratom tolerance you’ve acquired.
Fermented Kanna Vs. Kanna Resin Extract
Traditionally, the plant material is left to ferment in a container for a few days before consumption. But today, modern manufacturing techniques have created new and amazing botanical kanna products.
-
Fermented Kanna Powder
Happy Hippo purchases its Fermented Kanna Powder from a sustainable South African farm near Cape Town. Fermented Kanna is the perfect, amazing botanical product to cheer you up during your daily tasks. And it’s more effective than generic raw Kanna powder. Start with a small serving to evaluate its effectiveness. Soon after, optimism shall begin to take hold.
-
Kanna Resin Extract
The Kanna Resin Extract we provide has approximately 25 times the amount of its primary alkaloids. This means the Kanna extract is more potent than the traditional Kanna powder we sell. Kanna extract is preferable when you desire more potent effects without ingesting additional plant biomaterial. Watch the serving size. We have very informative articles on the Happy Hippo Blog that teaches you how to use Kanna extract. Stick to its directions, and you cannot go wrong.
Warning Note: DO NOT combine Kanna with prescription medications, especially anti-depressants. The combination could have adverse health complications. Please speak with your physician for further information.
What Makes Akuamma an Amazing Botanical?
Picralima nitida, more commonly known as Akuamma, is the only species of plant found in its plant genus. It’s indigenous to the tropical regions of Africa. Its seeds are dried and crushed into a powdered substance taken orally. Akuamma produces several alkaloids. However, most of its effects come from its Akuammine compounds: structurally related to Mitragynine—one of the two primary Kratom alkaloids. At Happy Hippo, we’re happy to offer our customers Akuamma Extract Capsules that provide 20 times the amount of Akuamma alkaloids as the traditional powder.
Akuamma is an amazing botanical since it promotes mental wellness and relieves discomfort. Some users report it calms and helps them relax before bedtime. Our capsules circumvent the natural bitter flavor. Take one or two and chug them down with your favorite beverage. The effects of Akuamma may occur 30 minutes after consumption. Determine its effects before taking additional servings.
FAQs About Kratom
On the internet, you can find a lot of misinformation about Mitragyna speciosa: Kratom. But you can find a lot of factual knowledge on it, too. To dispel any myths you might have heard or read, we’ll quickly cover some of the necessary facts you should know. Let’s get started.
Does Kratom Have Any Side Effects?
The simple answer is yes. You can experience Kratom side effects.
A few extra factors go into that equation: your brain chemistry, body measurements, Kratom strain, serving size, and Kratom tolerance level. All of these play a role in possible side effects.
Anyone who experiences any adverse effects from taking Kratom should stop consumption. The most common side effects come from ingesting too much, too quickly. Allow ample time to pass.
Common Kratom Side Effects:
- Nervousness or feeling jittery
- Upset Stomach
- Constipation
- Dehydration
- Drowsiness
- Building up a tolerance to Kratom
More on the issue of Kratom Tolerance:
Kratom Tolerance is the most common side effect. All daily consumers experience it at some point. Kratom tolerance means it’s harder to feel its effects. To compensate, most people start increasing the size and frequency of their serving sizes. However, there are a few simple steps to overcome tolerance.
Ways to Reduce Kratom Tolerance
- Rotate your daily kratom strain
- Keep your serving sizes small
- Only use kratom when necessary
- Take a few days off from using Kratom
Is Kratom a Natural Botanical?
Since Kratom is an herbal substance made from the crushed leaves of the Mitragyna speciosa tree, it gets classified as a natural botanical product. There are different types of Kratom products on the market. Traditional crushed leaf Kratom gets labeled as a natural botanical. However, Kratom extracts and their manufactured derivatives are processed in a way to isolate specific compounds to increase potency. In those cases, the Kratom loses its natural botanical essence.
All Kratom edibles and beverages use extracted alkaloids. Those processed goods are not natural botanical products either.
For customers that only want to consume Kratom in its purest natural botanical form, we recommend trying any of our Kratom powders. We have a massive selection of moderate-speed Kratom powders that allow you to relax and unwind from any troublesome day.
Is Kratom Legal?
At the federal level, there are no laws against Kratom. It’s a legal plant substance to the federal government. As a result, Kratom is legal in most states. Only a handful of states have made Kratom completely illegal. However, a few other states have local restrictions within their borders. So it’s a bit confusing, but don’t worry. We’ll explain the differences.
Currently, six states prohibit selling, purchasing, or consuming Kratom. They’re listed below.
States that Banned Kratom Completely:
- Alabama
- Arkansas
- Indiana
- Rhode Island
- Vermont
- Wisconsin
Now, there are six additional states where Kratom is legal, but local municipalities have passed ordinances to make it illegal at the local levels. Investigate each city and township within those states to get accurate and up-to-date information.
States that Have Local Restrictions:
- California
- Colorado
- Florida
- Illinois
- Mississippi
- New Hampshire
All other states maintain Kratom’s federal legal status and allow citizens to market and consume Kratom products. However, any state and local jurisdiction can change its legal status by passing legislation. Continue to monitor the laws in your area regarding Kratom.
What Makes a Reputable Kratom Vendor?
In the United States, Kratom is an unregulated product on the federal level. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) refuses to perform its duties. However, some states have passed legislation overseeing the manufacture of Kratom products. Currently, seven states passed a Kratom Consumer Protection Act. Those states are Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Utah.
In all other states where Kratom is legal, the responsibility gets laid upon the Kratom vendor to protect the consumer. That can create a conflict of interest. You should only purchase Kratom from a reputable vendor. Here’s a checklist to consider.
Things that Reputable Kratom Vendors Perform:
- Send Kratom samples to get tested for contaminants.
- Sign up for the American Kratom Association (AKA) GMP Program.
- Establish protocols for Good Manufacturing Practices and complete an annual audit.
- Donates regularly to Kratom advocacy campaigns: it keeps Kratom legal for everyone.
- Remains willing to answer questions regarding all concerns you might have.
A reputable Kratom vendor must adhere to these five components. Unfortunately, a lot of local Kratom companies do not. If that’s the case, look for another Kratom supplier online.
