Kratom is an herbal botanical that has been used as a natural remedy for centuries. It comes from the alkaloid-rich leaves of the Mitragyna Speciosa tree that thrives in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia.
Kratom alkaloids yield countless health benefits for the mind and body if used properly. Different Kratom strains offer benefits depending on the alkaloid content. The alkaloid content per strain varies by the region is was grown and the vein color of the leaf.
Fun Fact: Mitragyna Speciosa belongs to the same family of plants as coffee; Rubiaceae! Despite the relation, Kratom does not contain any caffeine.
Traditionally, Kratom leaves were chewed raw. Some natives of Southeast Asia still consume it that way. However, in the United States, Kratom is most commonly found in powder form. You can also find it available in Kratom capsules, and various forms of Kratom extracts.
One of the most popular ways to consume Kratom powder is by making Kratom Herbal Tea. In this article, we are going to talk about why people use Kratom Tea and which strains are best for the effect you’re looking for.

How To Make Kratom Tea
Our preferred method of making Kratom Tea is quite simple. Instead of steeping the Kratom powder, we just mix it directly in warm water and drink it down quickly.
What You’ll Need:
- Kratom Powder
- A small cup
- Measuring Scoop - a teaspoon works fine!
- Stirring stick or whisk
- Hot and Cold Water
- Juice (if preferred)
How we prepare Kratom Tea at Happy Hippo:
-
Prepare your serving size! Most users take anywhere between 1-5 grams in a single serving. For Newbies, we recommend starting off with 1 gram (½ Teaspoon) to evaluate effects.
-
Thoroughly mix the Kratom Powder in a small amount of WARM water. Warm water is key. Cold water causes the powder to clump together.
-
Continue to mix until mostly dissolved.
-
Once fully combined, add a dash of cool water or fruit juice. Juice is recommended if you don’t like the natural, bitter taste of Kratom. (You can use the juice as a chaser, too!)
- Enjoy! Drink it down quickly, like you’re taking a shot of alcohol. By consuming your full serving all at once, the effects will be more prominent.

How Does Kratom Tea Compare to Kava Tea?
Kava (Piper Methystyicum) is a succulent plant that has properties similar to Kratom. Instead of “alkaloids”, the active compounds in Kava that are responsible for the effects are called Kavalactones.
The dried Kava root is made into Kava Tea and consumed as a ceremonial beverage across the world. Both botanicals are considered safe to use in moderate amounts.
Kratom Tea can provide both energy and relaxation depending on the specific Kratom strain used, but Kava does not provide energizing effects. It’s mostly used to relax, chill out, unwind, and relieve physical discomfort.

How Long Does Kratom Tea Stay in Your System?
The duration of Kratom effects is mostly dependent on the serving size. However, the half-life of Kratom is thought to be about 24 hours.
This means that if you take a single gram, within 24 hours half of it will exited your system. In another 24 hours, you will be down to 0.25 grams from the original dose. Following this logic, it would take about a full week for the entire gram to be reduced to a trace amount.
